Lay People in Synod

Dignity/Chicago, the advocacy organization for LGBTQIA Catholics, made a statement today in support of Pope Francis' major reforms to the upcoming Synod of the Bishops, including the addition of a voting bloc composed of 70 non-bishop members.

Said chapter president Mary Donnelly, "We are pleased to see the synod will include lay people with a specific goal that 50% are to be women. It is also a positive indicator of a move toward more inclusion that half of the religious to be selected will be women, finally giving these vital church leaders a women's perspective on faith and spirituality. Having these voices and perspectives will be vital to a synod that is truly open to hearing the guidance of the Holy Spirit."

Donnelly further stated, "While a positive step, Dignity/Chicago continues to work for further inclusion of LGBTQIA people who will bring their voices and experiences into this conversation in order to share our experiences of God. Seeking the full inclusion and equality for queer Catholics in our church and society is core to Dignity's mission."

While we face many challenges in many aspects of our life, individually and communally, there is real clarity when it comes to our commitment to this mission and work; our response like Peter’s can be expressed in more modern words: “We believe, Lord, we’re all in!”
