Transgender Day of Visibility
Transgender Day of Visibility — observed each year on March 31 — is important not just as a celebration of the contributions, resilience, and humanity of transgender and gender-diverse people, but also as a vital counterbalance to the surge of laws and policies in the U.S. that actively undermine their rights and dignity. On this day, we affirm that trans people are valued members of our communities and highlight the barriers they still face, from discrimination and stigma to legislative attacks that restrict access to gender-affirming care, legal recognition, and basic freedoms.
In states like Kansas, lawmakers recently passed measures that invalidate updated gender markers on IDs and limit where transgender people can safely exist in public and private spaces, reinforcing exclusion and erasure of identity. In Florida, long-standing laws such as the Fairness in Women’s Sports Act and broader political efforts reflect an environment where trans people’s rights are contested and under threat.
Recognizing Transgender Day of Visibility now — in the face of these very real challenges — is a way to uplift trans voices, educate others about the lived realities of trans people, and stand in solidarity against policies that seek to diminish their equality and safety.
